Conditions at the Kashagan gas and oil field —the largest oil field discovered in several decades—are far from ideal. Temperatures around the northern Caspian Sea range from -40 degrees Celsius (-40 degrees Fahrenheit) in the winter to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer.

Kashagan Comes Onstream. Hailed as the largest oil field discovered in the last four decades, the Kashagan field is located about 80 km offshore Atyrau in the northern Caspian Sea. The agreement will involve Kazakhstan selling 8.33% of the oil field to the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) for about $5bn. The recent establishment of 20 production wells comes eight years after it was originally scheduled. The Caspian Sea region, which includes Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran, is one of the oldest oil-producing areas in the world and is an increasingly important source of global energy production.The area has significant oil and natural gas reserves from both offshore deposits in the Caspian Sea itself and onshore fields in the region.
