FCHI grew out of an initiative within Emory College of Arts & Sciences, whose department chairs and program directors wanted a focal point for research into various dimensions of the human experience. It was named after former professor, dean and senior vice president for institutional advancement Bill Fox and his wife, Carol, in 2006. The Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry is a focal point for humanities research at Emory University, and is dedicated to providing occasions and spaces for encouraging intellectual community and scholarship across disciplines. Students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences awarded an URP Grant can apply to be a FCHI/URP Fellow. The Halle Institute for Global Research and the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry (FCHI) offer up to ten fellowships to support research outside the United States for juniors in any school (Arts and Sciences, Business, Nursing) contemplating honors theses or other types of senior capstone projects. The Halle Institute - FCHI Undergraduate Global Research Fellows Program awards fellowships to up to ten undergraduate juniors each year who propose research outside the United States for their honors theses or senior capstone projects.
